Refugees in Switzerland

In the second quarter of 2018, 3769 asylum applications were filed in Switzerland, about 14 % less than in the same period of the previous year. In June 2018, 1246 applications were registered, a decrease of 23.7 % compared to June 2017.

In the first half of 2018 7820 asylum applications were submitted in Switzerland; this corresponds to a 14.3 % decline compared to the first half of 2017.

The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) completed 2270 asylum applications in June 2018. 419 were refused (379 based on the Dublin Agreement), 589 persons were granted asylum and 766 persons were intermediately admitted.

In June 2018, 573 people left Switzerland or were returned. Switzerland has asked other Dublin states to take 551 persons over.

The main countries of origin of asylum seekers in June 2018 were Eritrea with 222 requests (-52), Afghanistan with 122 requests (+31), Syria with 112 requests (-2), Georgia with 101 requests (+12) and Sri Lanka with 71 requests (+15).
